Multiple World Triathlon Champion Chris McCormack has confirmed his attendance in 2013 at the biggest middle distance event in Europe, which is being held in the coastal resort of Calella next May 19, 2013: Half Challenge Barcelona – European Middle Distance Triathlon Championship.
After four consecutive wins in 2004-2007 at the now legendary circuit of Roth, the biggest long distance event in the triathlon world, multiple world champion Chris McCormack and the Challenge Family announced last October his intention to collaborate with CHALLENGE for the next ten years as an ambassador for the German brand.
Australia’s Chris McCormack started competing over 15 years ago, and became World Champion over the Olympic distance in 1997. His career has gone from strength to strength ever since, among other titles winning the prestigious Hawaii Ironman twice, peaking last July by topping the podium at the World long Distance Triathlon Championship in Vitoria, a venue that in 2013 will form part of the Challenge Family.
Today the multiple world champion has announced his intention of appearing in May 2013 at the Half Challenge Barcelona-Maresme, which this year doubles as the European Middle Distance Championship.
Race director Agustí Pérez has said that “thanks to this agreement, the Challenge brand has once again been placed at the forefront of Middle and Long Distance events, offering triathletes, in addition to a well designed circuit and top class attention to sportspeople, unique “EXPERIENCES”, such as the chance to compete shoulder to shoulder with one of the biggest triathlon stars, Chris McCormack. We are proud to welcome Macca to the Half Challenge-Barcelona. We all know that he’s a great triathlete, and most importantly what a wonderful person and ambassador for our sport he is. Macca transmits all of the values of triathlon and I’m sure that his presence will make Half Challenge-Barcelona 2013 a uniquely unforgettable experience for all the participants”.
For Chris McCormack “Racing in Spain has always been positive for me. Barcelona is without question my favourite city in Spain. After living in Girona for a few seasons my wife and I would spend many weekends relaxing in Barcelona. It is almost a home away from home for us. I won a World Championship in Spain in 2012 and have spent years training in the beautiful countryside of this country. It is without question one of my favourite places to race. Challenge Barcelona for me will be a key race in my season. I am excited about racing in this beautiful region and more than anything supporting a wonderful race in a spectacular part of the world. I will see you all in May. Safe training.”
