Two of this year’s top Ironman World Championship contenders, Australia’s Pete Jacobs and Switzerland’s Caroline Steffen, took the victories in Kona-like conditions at Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Jacobs combined a 21:26 swim, 2:15:35 bike and 1:27:55 half marathon to narrowly take the 4:07:38 victory. New Zealand’s Cameron Brown was right on his heels, finishing second in 4:09:01. Canada’s Mathieu O’Halloran earned third.
On the same day of fellow countrywoman’s Nicola Spirig Olympic gold performance, Steffen turned in an impressive race herself. Steffen continued her stellar 2012 season, combining a 24:03 swim, a 2:20:43 bike and a 1:32:49 run to finish in 4:20:48. That time put her across the finish line only 13 minutes after the male winner and was good enough for sixth overall (men and women) in the race. American Bree Wee turned in a steady day across swim, bike and run to finish second in 4:27:24. Aussie veteran Belinda Granger earned third at 4:32:09.
