On September 30th, the seaside town of Calella will host one of the most prestigious events of the international long distance race: Challenge Barcelona.
Major figures of triathlon have already confirmed their presence in this event that will take place on an spectacular circuit, which runs along the Maresme’s coastline and that have been awarded “Best organization 2010 and 2011” by the Spanish Triathlon Federation. In recent times, it has been confirmed as the venue of the 2013 European Half Distance Triathlon Championship.
Next 30th of September, Lothar and Nicole LEDER and Andreas Niedrig, all of them important figures of the long distance race, will take part in Challenge Barcelona, among other recognized triathletes.
Lothar is one of the favourites to finish on the podium; he has won several long distance races and, besides, he has got third place in Ironman Hawaii twice (1996-1997).
His most remarkable success was in 1996, when he was the first triathlete in finishing a long distance triathlon (Roth) in less than eight hours (7:57:02). He was the winner of that edition and, also, of four others (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003).
The German triathlete will be accompanied by his wife, Nicole Leder, who will also participate in this event. The circuit is a 3800M swim, 180 km cycle run and a 42.2 km run. Nicole Leder participated for the first time in a triathlon event in 1989 but she has not taken part in a long distance race until 2000, when she got the 14th place in Ironman Hawaii, where she was a finisher for several years. In 2007 she had her most notable success; she won in Frankfurt (Germany) and was crowned as European Long Distance Champion.
Another major figure of the international scene is the German triathlete Andreas Niedrig. He has been participating in triathlon events for two decades now. During his career he has had important successes as his 7th place in Ironman Hawaii (2001) and his podium in Roth (1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001). He has also won Westfalen Triathlon Championship several times, what makes of him a legend in this discipline.
Once again, Challenge Barcelona is considered as a reference in the long distance events. The best international triathletes, Lothar and Nicole Leder as well as Andreas Niedrig, will participate. This talks about the high quality of the Challenge Family’s events.
