Not many people can say that they have beaten seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong in a straight head-to-head challenge. Fewer, still, that they have ‘chicked’ the great man. This morning, Mary Eggers can lay claim to both.
Egger’s challenged Armstrong over Twitter to a 50m kick-off (using only their legs and kickboards) and emerged victorious from the Duel In The Pool.
Funds raised from the event went to Armstrong’s foundation, LIVESTRONG, and the Rochester-based Teens Living with Cancer program, which will use some of the proceeds to open a chapter in Buffalo.
Entering the pool dressed in a boxers robe, Eggers and Armstrong were neck and neck for the entire race. Then, with a final push, the 3xKona athlete took the win – and the victorious yellow rubber duck.
“Best two out of three?” Armstrong joked following his drefeat.
But Eggers had a feeling that Lance wasn’t taking the race all that seriously. “He was definitely toying with me – a lot,” she said after the race
“It feels good,” she continued. “I think I’m the first woman athlete to beat Lance Armstrong.”
“It’s a bummer to get ‘chicked’ by Mary,” Armstrong said in his post-race interview.
