Four-time Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington finished third at the 35th edition of the Empire State Building Run-Up in a time of 13:15 (12:39).

Wellington, who only decided to enter the race 24 hours before it started, finished less than a minute behind the women’s winner Melissa Moon.

The race, which is an 86-story (1576 steps) climb to the observatory of one of the world’s most famous buildings, features a field of just 650 people.

Following the race, Wellington tweeted: Running up the Empire State Building was one of the hardest, but most exhilarating things i have ever done. And the view was amazing!
