The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has banned Tour de France champion Alberto Contador from competing for two-years for doping.

The Spaniard tested positive for clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour de France, a charge he claimed was due to eating contaminated meat.

The ban has been backdated to the date that he was informed of the failed test, meaning that he can resume competition at the start of August this year. However, his 2010 victory at the Tour, plus all of his wins in 2011, are now forfeit. Andy Schleck will now be named 2010 Tour de France champion and Michele Scarponi 2011 Giro d’Italia champion.

A 2007 and 2009 champion, Contador becomes only the second cyclist to be stripped of a Tour de France title (2010) in the history of the sport. Floyd Landis was also stripped of his title in 2006 after a positive drugs test.
