Gear Check: Rapha Thermal Shorts & Merino Knee Warmers

Rapha’s Thermal Shorts are ideal for those late season sessions or short winter races where a short with a knee warmer is more than adequate. They combine a soft Lycra outer with warm fleecy Thermoroubaix on the inside to keep you toasty.

Rapha have made them 5cm longer than their regular shorts to provide more coverage and added thigh insulation. Inside is the same quality Cytech pad as their summer Pro Team Bibs. This takes care of comfort duties long after your feet and hands have gone numb. This pad has a wicking layer on top and the multi-density padding under your sit bones does a top job of taking out any road sting.

A dense mesh back on the bibs helps to provide warmth without sweat issues. The cut, finish and quality is typical of what we come to expect from Rapha and neat finishing touches like the subtle reflective leg tag and radio pockets (ideal for phones and keys) just add to the package.

We used them with Rapha’s Knee Warmers which made them even more versatile. These are made from a blend of quick drying natural wool that remains warm even when wet with Lycra for a good fit. This is a great combo that will work well for the cooler months.
