The Outlaw Triathlon is set for this Sunday, 24th July at Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. Athletes are gearing up to complete a 2.4mile swim in the regatta like followed by a 112mile bike ride and then a 26.2mile marathon run.
The race features 600 competitors racing for individual and relay glory. Registration opens on Friday as the excitement builds and competitors arrive from all around the world.
Event organiser, Iain Hamilton, said: “We’re on site now and looking forward to the athletes arriving. A lot of hard work goes into organising an event of this size, and we know how hard the competitors will have worked just to make it to the start line, so we’re aiming to ensure that it’s an amazing day for them.
“I’d encourage as many people as possible to come to Holme Pierrepont and to get out around the route to cheer the competitors on. Last year there were around 11,000 people out on the route. We’ve got some free busses going out to Southwell, which is one of the main cheering points, and we’d ask that people use those or get on their bikes to support the athletes.”
Some of the interesting competitors taking part in the event are:
- Tom Lowe: the British Ironman record holder and partner of Chrissie Wellington. Tom is competing in a relay with his Gi Tri Bridgetown team
- Joel Jameson: the international former rower returns to Nottingham as one of the favourites to take the Outlaw title having finished fourth at Ironman Lanzarote in May. However, his preparations were put on hold briefly as he recently married Cat Pickthall, who is part of the Gi Tri Bridgetown relay team.
- Hywel Davies: the 36 year old Welshman is also fancied for the win having previously clocked 8hour 44minutes over the same distance in Roth, Germany. This is almost half an hour faster than last year’s winning performance at the Outlaw.
- Russell Cox: raced at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii last October. Although he claims to have injury concerns, he will still be one of the fastest and most experienced athletes at the race.
- Tim Draycott: a local novice triathlete who won his entry through a competition in a magazine. The Derbyshire policeman from Stapleford is set to get married next month.
- Lucy Gossage: was part of the winning relay team last year which crossed the line in 8hours52minutes and returns to do the bike leg as part of the TFN/Compressport team having turned professional this year.
- Mark Redwood: a sub ten hour athlete at the World Championships in Hawaii, Redwood has teamed up with Andy Tarry and Alec Duffield in a relay team. He’s also the owner of Total Fitness Nottingham, who are the retail partners of the event.
- Kevin Currell: British Triathlon’s nutrition expert tackles his own triathlon challenge having previously raced at Ironman UK.
- Emma Rand: the only returning podium finisher from 2010 will look to move up from third last year.
- Simon Buckden: an Ex-Serving soldier from Leeds runs his 23rd marathon of 100 marathons in 100 weeks to raise awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and funds for Help for Heroes.
- Rik Vercoe: running his 21st of 30 marathons in 30 weeks, this time in fancy dress in pursuit of the world record for the fastest outlaw (cowboy) to run a marathon.
The event starts at 6am, with the fastest individual competitors expected to complete the course shortly after 2.30pm. It’s free to come along to the venue, but beware, watching could be really inspiring and you may find yourself signing up for Outlaw 2012 (or at least we hope so!) The date for the 2012 event will be announced during this weekend.
