Ospaly And Theurig Win Ironman 70.3 Austria

The Czech Republic’s Filip Ospaly and Swiss cycling star Karin Thuerig took the fifth edition of Ironman 70.3 St. Pölten event today, leading the way for the 2,073 athletes who participated in the race.
The water temperature, in spite of the previous cool weather, was around 19°C, which guaranteed a pleasant first discipline. When the pros started the race at 7:00 AM about 20,000 spectators were already lined up along the two lakes in which the 1.9 km swim takes place.
Age grouper Radoslaw Krawczyk got out of the water after 21:46 with Grant Williams from the UK second (23:02). Filip Ospaly made it out of the water in 24:16 as the fastest pro.
On the women’s side, Switzerland’s Simone Benz came out of the water in 25:22. Erika Csomor was 2:30 minutes behind (27:16), followed by the young Austrian Eva Wutti in 0:28:57. Age grouper Dora Rozsa was the third fastest swimmer of the day.
Ospaly would keep the lead for 52 km, where he was passed by local hero Michael Weiss. With Ospaly close behind, the chase group consisted of Thomas Hellriegel, Paul Amey and Michael Göhner. Weiss kept the lead and was first in the second transition after 2:35:20.
Karin Thürig, from Switzerland, rode the fastest women’s bike split in 2:18:01, with Austrian Eva Wutti following in 2:23:57. Third woman off the bike was Hungarian Erika Csomor (2:25:50) and fourth was Yvonne Van Vlerken (2:28:07).
During the 21.1 km run, Weiss stayed in first until the 19th km, where Ospaly finally managed to pass the Austrian. He won the race for a second time in 3:55:27. Weiss (3:56:01) was cheered by his home crowd and crossed the finish line in second. On third place was Britain‘s Paul Amey, who finished in 3:57:41.
On the women’s Thürig won the race in 4:20:34. Erika Csomor followed in second in 4:24:19, who beat the defending champion Yvonne Van Vlerken (4:26:56). Fourth, and top Austrian, was Eva Wutti in 4:31:51.
