Pushing on from a strong 2010, Emma-Kate Lidbury took a comprehensive victory at this weekend’s TriStar111 Nevis, beating three-time Ironman Brazil champion Fernanda Keller to the top spot by over half an hour. We caught up with EK to find out about her race:
TE: Great result yesterday. You must be pleased?
EKL: Yes, it was a hard race in hot and humid conditions, so it was good to race well and get such a convincing win.
TE: Did your swim go to plan?
EKL: It was significantly easier than the StarMile2.5 swim last weekend (Lidbury was first female out of the water with a record breaking time of 1:02). Not only was it shorter but the conditions were much calmer (laughs). I have been working with Dan Bullock from Swim For Tri recently, so had plenty to think about throughout the swim. Chris McCormack and Wolfgang Guembel were leading with Olivier Marceau in third. I was chasing Marceau in fourth place. I ended up coming out of the water about 20 seconds after him.
TE: How was the hilly bike?
EKL: It was hard going into such a severe climb just moments after leaving T1. I went up the hill okay and the first lap was all about trying to find a rhythm and get comfy on the bike. To be honest I never really found my usual bike legs. It’s been an interesting week for me on the bike front after discovering my race bike which I brought with me had been damaged in transit. All credit to my sponsors, Wiggle, who got me a replacement frame from Portsmouth to the West Indies in just two days.
TE: What about the run?
EKL: I think the run was always going to be tough. Firstly because of the heat and humidity, and secondly because of riding such a hard bike course. On the bike I had nailed my nutrition strategy which paid dividends in the early stages of the run.
TE: How were the latter stages of the run?
EKL: It was hard because there were parts of the run course where there was no wind making the heat and humidity feel even more extreme. I’ve been working with the Running School in Chiswick and I felt the benefits of this with my improved run form and better approach to running up and down hills. As always the final miles involved digging deep and climbing into the hurt locker, but knowing I had the win in the bag certainly took the edge off the pain (laughs).
TE: How did you enjoy the TriStar format and the event itself?
EKL: The organisation was first class. The atmosphere and support from locals was superb and rivalled that of events 10 times its size. It was both a credit to TriStar and the people of Nevis who were involved.
