Sports Tours International saddle up for the Gran Fondo New York

Europe’s largest cycling travel company, Sports Tours International are offering cyclists around the world the opportunity to ride the big apple in the inaugural Gran Fondo New York 2011.
Sports Tours International, the Official Travel Partner to the event will be offering a number of travel packages, including entry to the race and accommodation in New York City to people in UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Sports Tours International Head of Commercial Brendan Fox said: “With this being the inaugural year for the Gran Fondo New York we are very excited about being involved. Gran Fondo and New York are not two phrases you’d normally put in the same sentence but after the popularity of the Italian Gran Fondos where better to take the challenge than the greatest city in the world.”
Taking place on May 8 the Gran Fondo New York will see 8,000 cyclists, cycle from New York City to New Jersey, across the iconic George Washington Bridge and up four climbs, one of which is Bear Mountain in Harriman State Park.
Event organiser Lidia Rekas said: “Our goal is to bring quintessential Italian cycling culture to the world’s greatest city. The combination of ‘Italianita’ and NYC will make Gran Fondo New York an event not to be missed.”
The race will also act as a qualifying race for the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT), the 2011 UCI Amateur Cycling World Championship. As one of the six qualifying events in 2011, Gran Fondo New York will send the top 10% of each age group to Belgium where the World Championship finale will take place on the famed roads of the Belgian cycling classics Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Sports Tours International is offering a three-night travel package to New York from Friday May 4 to Monday May 9, including accommodation and airport/hotel transfers on the Friday and Monday, prices starting from £565 per person. Entry to the race is an additional cost of £135 per person.
