A Training Week In The Life Of Jodie Stimpson

The best triathletes in the world will be descending on Hyde Park this weekend. And one of the Brits who will be looking to take some big name scalps is Jodie Stimpson. Jodie comes into the ITU World Championship Series on the back of a strong run of form, including a win at the hotly-contested French Grand Prix last weekend.

But how does she prepare for a race like this? Jodie is part of Michelle Dillon’s Team Dillon, and as a week in her training life shows, Michelle knows how to put her athletes through their paces!

THE WEEK:
Notes:

This is a typical training week for me when I am not racing, it gets shorter when I am racing, but when I’m not, it’s pretty much like this.

MONDAY
Training:

50 minute morning run (I love running in the morning)
60-75 minute swim (3-5km). This is usually a hard, short main session and after this session I always have a PowerBar Protein plus bar (chocolate of course)
75-90 minute bike ride
Notes:
Today is when I usually travel up to Loughborogh to train with Michelle Dillon my coach from Team Dillon and Stuart Hayes.

TUESDAY
Training:

2-3 hour bike to run session. This is a pretty tough session with hard intervals in the bike and the run. It’s usually me trying to hold on to the back end of my coach Michelle Dillon and Stuart Hayes. During this session I have to have at least 3 Powerbar Gels to get me through the session)
60-75 min recovery swim (usually 4k)
30 minute evening run (this is usually very slow)
Notes:
This is one of my favorite days because it has the bike run session.

WEDNESDAY
Training:
60 minute easy run
75-90 minute swim (5k session, aerobic main set)
90-120 minute bike ride
Notes:
I always struggle with Wednesday’s, feeling tired from the day before.

THURSDAY
Training:
60 minute run track session. Hard session!!! Another favorite of the week, depending on how long the track session is, I always try to practice nutrition during this session, so taking a gel during the run is sometimes harder than it seems.
75 minute 3k recovery swim (my arms never seem want to work in this swim)
45 minute easy spin on turbo
Notes:
This is the day before my day off. That’s what gets me through the hard track session.

FRIDAY:
Notes:

Day off! Well deserved and this is usually were I get my massage from Phil Hitch at Birmingham Uni. He is my god send!

SATURDAY:
Training:

2 hour bike with a 30-40 minute run.
90 minute 5k swim. This is a hard, main session – usually sprints – so I always look forward to my chocolate fix Powerbar protein bars.
Notes:
I usually spend the weekends at home in Oldbury so these session are, usually done on my own or if I can find someone to drag out with me.

SUNDAY:
Training:

90 minute long run. I love these runs even if my legs don’t!
60-90 minue 4-5k swim
Notes:
Sunday afternoons usually consists of my mum, dad and sister tucking into a nice dinner cooked by mum. Meanwhile, chicken salad for me :-)
