Kona Calling: Andy Brodziak’s Blog (Part Three)

As part of our build-up to Kona, we’ll be following three athletes as they prepare to take on the legendary race. Andy Brodziak, 31, is a Corrective Exercise Sports Trainer and Triathlon Coach. Andy qualified for Kona at Ironman UK (10:12) and has previously represented both Great Britain and South Africa at ITU triathlon and duathlon events.
Howzit. Last week provided pretty solid training across all three disciplines. I wrapped up the week with the Hever Castle triathlon. It was a sunny day on Sunday when Rik and I headed down to Kent for the race. Neither of us realised at the time but Rik had left his wetsuit at home.
Not a good start when the water was a chilly 15 degrees. Ouch!
We were running a little late and had to dash to a nearby bush pre-race as the toilets were no go at this time. With just three minutes to spare I put on my wetsuit and rushed to the lake. Not a great start to the race. Fortunately I had a good swim coming out with the second and third guys.
Out of T2 I tried to stay with the leaders on bike but fell back a bit over the tough hilly 40km course. I hung in there and out on to the run, which was off-road, I gained a place but suffered with tired legs. I ended up finishing sixth overall. Rik finished a little further down the field but had a great time considering he did the swim without his wettie – maybe that’s because he has more body fat!
The next four days will be consistent training before I fly out on Friday. It’s all go go at the moment but I am feeling good though. Next time I’ll be writing from Kona… Aloha! I am off seeing the boys from Chelsea and Fulham chiropractors for a tweak this and getting a final rub down on the legs. Ciao for now – Andy
