Kona Calling: Andy Brodziak’s Blog (Part Two)

As part of our build-up to Kona, we’ll be following three athletes as they prepare to take on the legendary race. Andy Brodziak, 31, is a Corrective Exercise Sports Trainer and Triathlon Coach. Andy qualified for Kona at Ironman UK (10:12) and has previously represented both Great Britain and South Africa at ITU triathlon and duathlon events.
What felt like quite a bit of time left before Kona the departure day is creeping up nicely. It’s pretty full on getting stuff together right now. I always find just before a big event, apart from the training – that’s the easy bit, the trickiest thing is getting balance. Trying to get that right is the difference between arriving at the start exhausted and mentally fatigued or relaxed ready to race. I am trying to see a few mates, have yummy dinners and of course do some work along the way too. It’s all part of that balance.
I wouldn’t change it for anything though, that is what’s cool about this lifestyle we create for ourselves as triathletes. Recently I have been doing some good swims, running is cooking as always and I need to get in saddle for a long one this week. The weather in London is good right now so that makes it less of a drama.
With just seven days to go before I head to the Big Island I intend to have a solid week of training. This weekend I’m racing the inaugural Heaver Castle Triathlon, so that should be a good final run out. I’ll let you know how that goes in my next blog. I had a great time biking in Tuscany recently, which is beautiful place. I am pleased to say I managed to have a good time riding in the hills.
